The email analogy

Think of Peppol like email for invoices. You do not build a private line to every customer. You pick a provider connected to the network; your customer picks theirs; the network delivers between them. In the UAE those providers are Accredited Service Providers (ASPs).

That is why you do not integrate with each customer one by one — you integrate (or connect) once with an ASP, and they handle the network side.

The five corners

Standard Peppol is a four-corner model: supplier → supplier's Access Point → buyer's Access Point → buyer. The UAE built its Electronic Invoicing System on a Peppol-based DCTCE model — Decentralised Continuous Transaction Control and Exchange — and adds a fifth corner: the tax authority. Required invoice data also reaches the FTA. That is why you will hear "five-corner model."

What PINT AE means in practice

PINT (Peppol International Invoice) is a base invoice specification. PINT AE is the UAE-specific version — the exact structure, fields, and rules a UAE e-invoice must follow. The document itself is structured XML, not a PDF.

In practice that means your invoice data must include the mandatory commercial and tax fields the UAE profile expects — things like who is selling, who is buying, what was supplied, amounts, and VAT treatment — in a form an ASP can turn into valid PINT AE XML.

If your "system" today is a spreadsheet or a simple invoicing app, you do not need to become an XML expert. You need complete, consistent invoice data and a path (via an ASP and, usually, software that connects to it) to put that data on the network when your wave goes live.

Why the UAE chose an international standard

Building on Peppol means UAE businesses can use a known global network model instead of a one-off national format that nobody else understands. Suppliers of Access Points, software, and accountants already work with Peppol ideas elsewhere. PINT AE then layers UAE-specific rules on top of that base so local tax and invoice requirements are met without inventing a wholly separate world.

What you personally need to do

Realistically, almost nothing technical about Peppol or PINT AE itself. Your ASP and your invoicing software handle the format. Your job is clean, complete invoice data — and appointing an ASP before your deadline if you are in scope.
